Do You Need New Year's Resolutions That You Can Actually Keep?

New Year's Resolutions

Hello! This is again that time of the year when we spend all our time deciding what to do next year? or what to start new this new year? or what should be our new year goals? We get so excited that we start making such lists of all imaginary or impossible goals that we end up neglecting just after 2 or 3 months of the new year.

Why can't we keep New Year's resolutions?

Following are some of the reasons behind our failure to stick to our yearly resolutions or goals:

  • We have set unrealistic goals.
  • The goals are not inspiring.
  • There is no reminder to us about our goals.
  • The goals are copied from others or taken as such goals that are trending.
  • The goals do not match our interests our aim or our nature.
  • Some of the goals need some time to complete which may be more than a year.
  • We have a resolution or a goal but we don't have a plan.
  • The goals are not specific.
  • We make goals around people who may change or who don't align with our goals.
  • The goals are too overwhelming.
  • The goals need a lot of time, hard work, and dedication. ( It is a good thing, but sometimes such goals do overburden us and result in the failure of goals)

How to make sure that we stick to our New Year's goal or resolution?

Well, there are a lot of things that we can do to stick to our goals or New Year's resolutions. Some of the easy ways are:
  • Firstly, the goals should be realistic.
  • They shouldn't depend on others.
  • There should be a plan to achieve those goals.
  • The goals should inspire you and it would be much better if they were specific and trackable goals.
  • The goals reflect a part of our identity. So, make sure to have such goals that are aligned to you or your life or to your life goals.
  • Check the requirements of your goals like time or money or hard work or so on. Then check whether you have those requirements. If not, then having those things first should be your goal.
  •  Have a daily or weekly reminder of your goals or resolutions. You can set reminders or paste something on a wall that you frequently see. Or you can have a vision board for yourself.

Example of some of the New Year's Resolutions That You Can Actually Keep

If you still have no idea what to set as a resolution or goal then here are some examples of simple and easy New Year's resolutions that you can actually keep:
  • 'Each week I am going to cook something new'. This will help you in controlling your outside eating or junk heating. Also, you will learn to cook. Since here we have used weekly instead of daily so the burden on you is less but effective in motivating you to achieve it. You can make a tracker to track whether you have cooked something new in a particular week or not. This is quite a healthy habit.
  • ' I will read at least 5 pages daily'. The number of pages can be adjusted according to your reading skill. A daily reading habit is said to be more calming than others. You can even mention the books whose five pages you are going to read daily. This will ensure that you stick to your goal. Otherwise, you will skip reading with the excuse of not finding the right book to read. This resolution is indirectly saying that you will waste less time binge-watching or just swiping Instagram reels or any such thing.
  • 'I will have a weekly/ monthly cleaning routine'. Having a clean and tidy living or working area increases your productivity and efficiency.

  • 'I will have a no social media day each month'. This will help you in cleaning your mind.
  • 'I will talk to a friend each week'. So that in the race of life, you don't let your friends be left behind.
  • 'I will try to spend a day devoted fully to my family each month or every 6 months or each year.' We all need a family and our family needs us. But in our busy schedules, we often don't have time for our loved ones. So this is the reason behind this goal.
  • 'I will use stairs whenever it is possible.' If you have a busy schedule and don't have time for a workout, then this is just for you. Bringing more physical activity into your day-to-day routine will help you in improving your physical strength and stamina.
  • 'I will start a new hobby/ I will revive my old hobby of ___'. Hobbies are just another way of calming down your mind and de-stressing it.
  • 'I will save x amount of money per month for having next new year celebration in __ place or for buying a particular product .' It can be a vacation or anything. The idea here is to help you in having a habit of saving. If saving x amount can help you in achieving a particular goal, then you will automatically be inclined to start saving and achieving bigger goals.
  • 'I will write at least three lines each day'. Journal writing is a great tool for self-management. If you get this habit of journal writing, then trust me your whole life will change.
  • 'Each month I will write a letter to a friend/ loved ones.' You can write to different people or anyone from your family. Calling them or messaging them is quite easy and thus it has lost its importance. But sending a letter with a message has a different feeling. It will help you in improving your relationship.
  • 'I will limit my smoking/drinking habit to x times a day/week'. If you want to quit any habit like this, then it would be better if you take small steps rather than deciding to quit immediately. Going slow will help you in controlling the side effects of reducing such toxic substances. Also, slow and steady wins the race.

  • 'Each month I will take one day for myself'. This day you will be allowed to do anything within your limits. Like you can eat outside or do a party outside or have a spa or buy anything for yourself or do anything that makes you happy. You are the most important person in your life. Don't forget this.
And there are many such goals that you can incorporate into your list. So, what are you waiting for? Start making your New Year's resolutions. Don't forget to share it with me ( only if you want). I would love to hear from you.
